product images

L3 So far I am very disappointed in the images I have found on the web regarding product photography. It seems that the majority of them are very brightly lit, with little shadow, but loads of detail, which is good. This does acentuate the product, but so many are all the same after doing some research I am getting bored. Do we adhere to the masses, or try to be creative. I suppose it all depends on the clients brief, and if you want to make money.

  1. I reckon the object you're photographing and why you are doing so must be the main influences on the technique you use (apart from practical limitations). Is it art you're aiming to produce or is it for a simple ilustration of a product? What is the aim of making the image? A customer might want to convey a 'lifestyle' or atmosphere (e.g. sophisticated, uncluttered, amusing, child-friendly,rural, peaceful ... etc.) or they might just want a very clear 'catalogue shot'.
It's perhaps the difference between a product shot and still-life, as Jim says 'a portrait of an object', conveying its essential character.
